Microsoft —friend to small business?

Have you heard? Microsoft has released Office Accounting Express 2007, a free small business accounting suite.  Yep, that’s right, I said FREE!  I haven’t checked it out too thoroughly yet, the download just finished.  But from early investigation, it seems like a great idea.

According to the report on vnunet.com, all the basic functions of the program are free with additional add-on features such as integration with Ebay and Equifax are fee based.  They say:

The Express 2007 version targets smaller companies, while the forthcoming Office Accounting Professional 2007 is aimed at firms with more complex needs such as inventory management, support for multiple currencies and multi-user access.

When you go to download the software, you see that Microsoft is really making efforts to win the entrepreneur’s heart. The software launch is coinciding with their upcoming ideaWins: Ultimate Challenge, one would assume a “best new business idea,” entrepreneurial spirit type thing.

It would seem that Bill Gates is now merging his philanthropic life with his business one:

We believe people everywhere have great ideas. But they do no good trapped in your head. We want to help you turn them into a flourishing business by taking the hassle out of accounting and business management.

I’m looking forward to seeing what this software is all about.  Has anyone else tried it yet? I’d love to hear opinions.
